it's a new day

...
Okay... it's been a very hot weekend.... hopefully you found a way to stay cool. Heat Advisory until 10pm tonight. Horrific and tragic results following flash flooding at a camp ground near the Ark-La-Tex region.

It's a new day here at the television station... our "HD" conversion is taking place. Please be patient while we strive to bring you our normally outstanding broadcast quality.

Big weekend with the St. Jude Golf Classic this weekend in Memphis....

Wrap up in BASKETBALL NASCAR HOCKEY and GOLF !

Did you go to the movies this weekend to stay cool? Several new choices... but overall quality may be lacking... this summer at the box office, slim pickens for quality entertainment.

I love stories like this... makes you think about YOUR OWN legacy... once you are gone.

ROAD TRIP... I'll bet the kids would go crazy for this.

HOT!

...
the "Heat is On" folks... We're looking at mid 90's over the weekend, with Heat Index values topping 105. Let's be careful out there! Flash Flood watch for much of Arkansas.

In the NBA what happened with the Lakers and the Celtics last night?

On tour with the PGA, it's in our back yard this week... how will our "local" golfers do?

Tee it up!

...
No matter how hard I try, it's hard to keep "FedEx St. Jude Golf Classic" from coming out of my mouth. I know it's the St Jude Classic brought to you by Smith & Nephew, now that the previous sponsor ran into serious financial troubles. Locals will be on the look out for John Daly and Loren Roberts.

Fed Ex now sponsors like the entire tour! Round one, starts this morning... expect a few weather related interruptions. They bring with them serious weather equipment... including "lightning detection" devices.

IF you are heading out to enjoy the golf... remember: Lots of water, light colored, loose fitting clothes, lots of breaks, check on friends and loved ones, know where shelter is, in case of thunderstorms.

It's official... and she couldn't be more happy with the court's document.

Her name is Willow, she has a style all to herself and isn't afraid to show it. She comes from a famous family, and her brother is about to star in a new action film.

Was it just me... or did you hear they were expecting Twins....? So what is it?

She's no longer "sweet, adorable little Miley" anymore... now is she?

Mid-week Warm up

...
Scattered Showers and T-Showers this morning... then a break... with more rain likely later this afternoon! Even a slight risk for severe weather today.

Will the weather hold for the golf tourney here in Memphis that starts with round 1 tomorrow?

A slow moving storm moving out of Texas may interfere with our weather later in the week.

back at it.

...
It's back to work for most... after a hot, hot weekend. How's the weather looking for this week? Well, here's the forecast. The "golf tournament" on the PGA tour comes to Memphis this week.

It was the maiden flight of the SpaceX Falcon rocket Saturday. This was a test mission, will this vehicle help bring US crew members to the ISS?

In "sinkhole" news, this is the most amazing sink hole I've ever seen in all of my life. The picture almost looks fake. It's almost incomprehensible.

In NBA basketball...

Our local contestants may not have made it to the finals, but we are proud of them none the less... who was the big winner in this years "Spelling Bee?"

I was out "mowing the yard" the other day... it just takes a while to do the hedges.

If you are moving, maybe this is a bit more economical.

I finally move up to a "big boy" phone with the HTC HD2, only to find there is already a bigger, badder, newer phone out there.

I fear, more and more pictures like these... are going to be stuck in our long term memory. Emotions run deep. Anger, frustration, sadness, fear.

I love clams and scallops... and I'd have to at least give this a try.

For Charlie Sheen, one drama is about to come to a close, but another one may be starting. Have you seen who his "Ex" is seeing now? I'm telling you, you simply cannot write this stuff in Hollywood. It's just, beyond me.

Talk about a "rash" of notable passings as of late. Here's a list in case you have been "out of the loop." The year is not even half over yet... take a look back at "who we've lost" in 2010. The latest, a basketball legend, just one year short of the century mark.

Holiday Weekend

...
It's almost here, that long holiday weekend you've been waiting for. Just a few changes in the Mid-South weather pattern, fewer showers now likely for the weekend, not GONE all-together mind you... but just "not as much rain," now...

They just can't catch a break in the nrotheast.

Mid-week melt

...
Afternoon high temperatures continue a few degrees above normal, and scattered afternoon t-showers have become the norm. Find ways to stay cool!!

Who's getting hit the hardest today?

Did you hear me talk about "Hurricane Season" and the "LOW" off the South Atlantic coast stirring up trouble?

Be watching today to learn more about our BIG WINNER in the "Million Dollar Madness" contest.

You still have a chance in the 6-7am hour of daybreak this morning to win the "$300 with $100 in lottery tickets" but you won't be eligible for the grand prize.

Space Shuttle Atlantis is likely on the ground as you read this. Two scheduled landing opportunities this morning... The first one around 7:30 Memphis Time.

Missed "Dancing with the Stars?" can't wait to find out the winner? Here ya go.

This is going to make for some interesting reading.

More heat....

...
We'll be watching for a "break in the heat" but it's looking more and more like it won't be until the "end of the week" that we'll be seeing that.

Storms continue in the center of the country today

It's "Hurricane Prepardness Week" and we may be talking about Hurricane Alex... a week before hurricane season officially begins. www.stormpulse.com

This storm, named or not, will continue to affect the Atlantic Coastline.

Space Shuttle Atlantis, closer to coming home... on what "most likely" will be it's final mission. We talked yesterday about contingency plans for this shuttle.

Heat is on

...
Hope you were able to find a place to "stay cool" over the weekend. Temperatures flirted with the "record high" mark, but did not surpass. Today's record high, is the forecast high of 93. It will NOT surprise me if we are talking about record high temperatures in the Mid-South over the next couple of days.

Information about the funeral services for fallen officers can be found on our website, wreg.com

The worst of the weather, severe threat wise, is across the northern plains into the Dakotas.

Did SHREK live up to its history at the Box Office over the weekend?

So, what did you think of the "LOST" finale? Or the "Apprentice" outcome?

Here's some shocking news out of Hollywood this morning, husband of Brittany Murphy, dead.

Another look at the condition of the Shuttle Atlantis, now that it has departed from the ISS, and then on its way home. Is this the last mission for Atlantis? That's what we keep hearing, but Atlantis will be the designated "rescue shuttle" for the final two missions, and there's been talk of ONE more Atlantis mission next summer, so don't break out the moth balls just yet.

Redemption. Taylor Hicks is actually doing very well.

AND, it's not Taylor, but at 7 feet, 8 and a third inches tall, he's tallest, (in the USA) put it in the book.

Friday, find the AC

...
And by "find the AC" I'm not referring to my good friend Alex Coleman. Or our Mayor, AC Wharten. I'm talking "air conditioning" about "cooling off," as temps climb into the weekend, nearing 90 for most areas. Most pools don't open til the end of the month, right?!?

As our temperatures climb, the threat for severe weather diminishes, but rolls to the east.

Chances are good many families will be hitting the movie theatres to find cooler air. They'll likely be going to see the finale of this incredibly successful franchise.

There is a TON OF NEWS coming out of Hollywood. If you have a question, I'll bet it's answered here.

Temperature Turn around

...
After yesterdays incredible weather, get ready for ch-ch-changes... Slow warm up today, rain tomorrow and then H-O-T for the weekend. There is a chance for nasty weather to develop across the Mid-South tomorrow afternoon and evening... please stay alert to rapidly changing weather conditions. Today's "Severe weather threat" appears to be well to our west.

And if you are still confused about the difference between a "Landspout" and a Tornado, this may help. It prompted "Tornado Warnings" Sunday evening.

Beautiful Weather

...
This is going to be one of the nicest days in a long while. Minimal rain chances, sunshine, north winds, temps in the 70's. Especially when you take a glance at the long range forecast. Rain before the end of the week and then just HOT for the weekend. Take advantage of todays great weather!

Some of my fondest memories... while working there... and it's BACK!

Google is stepping up to the plate and announcing a mistake they've made, it appears innocent.

Even though I feel this show is nearing the end of its run, I think I can handle another 2 and a half years. I couldn't believe that Charlie would walk away from this cash cow.

back in the groove

...
It's going to be a tough day for many in the Mid-South this Monday morning, not that Monday's were easy to begin with, but after a weekend of parties via the Memphis in May World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest... well, let's put it this way, don't be surprised if a few of your co-workers call in sick this morning!

Weather wise... we're improving quickly for the first part of the week, after a wet weekend.

A big congrats to the local team that took home "TOP HONORS" at the BBQ fest.

Problem is, more wet weather may be with us by the end of the week.

Weekend!

...
We've made it. Time is running out for you to get down to Tom Lee Pork and enjoy the fun and festivities that the Memphis in May World Championship BBQ Festival offer. Let's shorten that to: "MIMWCBBQF" well, that's not very short is it?!?

Meeting and greeting and mixing business with pleasure is part of the festival.

Another celebrity break up. Not sure this one comes as a big surprise.

Shuttle Atlantis due to launch at 1:20 this afternoon, weather permitting. Final mission of the Atlantis. Off to the ISS for a supply run and delivery of a Russian Science module.

See this kid? Apparently 8 million hits on You Tube. It's pretty amazing, on Ellen yesterday. CBS talked about him Thursday morning, and on Letterman (I think) Thursday night.

Cyndi Lauper talks about her new album Memphis Blues. Due out July 22nd.

BBQ Fest!

...
It's that time of year... BBQ fest, officially, the "Memphis in May, World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest." The weather will hold for today, little concerned about some showers moving through overnight and tomorrow as well. Much like the music fest, a little rain isn't going to slow these hearty souls down.

Severe weather threat is just to our north and west today.

Who is NOT coming back on IDOL?

Now for some "GOOD NEWS" from Hollywoods elite.

And the "NOT SO GOOD NEWS" from the world of Hollywood.

Final mission for the shuttle Atlantis will begin Friday afternoon 1:20pm... launch from KSC if weather cooperates. Off to the ISS to deliver supplies and a Russian science module.

Mid Week warm up

...
Temperatures are climbing across the Mid-South today and tomorrow. We'll be nearing 90 with some gusting southerly winds. Cooler for the weekend, but be on the look out for scattered showers.

Another round of severe weather for the central plains?

TWO plane crashes in the news lately, one with local ties, the other in Libya this morning. It's believed weather may have played a part in the later.

Live in Mississippi? Looking for work...? It appears they are looking for "Clean up technicians" for those willing to take it to the coast. Not sure what the pay is. Here's how the story read this morning on Daybreak:

PREWETT ENTERPRISES IS HOLDING CLASSES FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN HELPING IN THE OIL SPILL CLEAN UP EFFORTS IN THE GULF.
THE CLASSES START AT SEVEN-30 THIS MORNING AT THE FACILITY ON STATELINE ROAD IN WALLS.
FOR MORE INFORMATION...CALL 662-781-2780.

Guess who's been in town for the past couple of weeks, flying low under the radar?

If you haven't been to the Memphis Zoo lately... expect changes, good changes from the "food department."

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Warming up

...
A windy and warmer day ahead... Temps will be climbing for the next several days, and highs near 90 should be expected. Scattered showers should also be expected during this period of unsettled weather. Remember the "HIGH RISK" for severe weather we talked about yesterday?

Baby names... there's a trend, and its tied to a popular movie.

A first of its kind, one of a kind theme park. Check this out!

I'm not sure I'm "on board" with this. I mean, I love the product, but don't need the tease.

NASCAR Carl Edwards fans... your vote is requested.

Who are the contestants, hoping to become the next "Food Network" star?

Fan of the Beatles, maybe John Lennon in particular? Lyrics up for auction, but they are going to set you back.

I hadn't thought much of "time sharing" out the family boat, but if you are interested and ready to hit the "high seas" be sure to check out the re-model.

And with the economy the way it is, we've decided to let go out summer home in Vermont.

Wet Start to the week

...
Wow, what a beautiful weekend. That all comes crashing to an end bright and early this morning, with rain likely here in the Mid-South. Turning WINDY and Warmer tomorrow. A threat for SEVERE weather will be across the central plains this afternoon.

No Pants day?

...
Windy and warm... today, as our coldfront rolls through with little fanfare. Rain will be mainly to our north. COOLER weather still expected for the weekend.

There is a threat for severe weather, just to our north for later today and tonight.

I'm not sure if your office is participating... but here's something to "liven up your Friday."

In Golf news, it's the TPC "Players Championship" in Jax this weekend, Tiger will drop from his Number ONE golfer in the world status without a good finish. It appears Lefty (Phil Mickelson) would be the new number, with a good showing.

A little "Meteor Shower" action for you this weekend?

Weekend almost here

...
Tomorrow is Friday, a day we all look forward to, but at the same time, I have been looking forward to the Coldfront that is due in this weekend. It means a break from the heat and low 70's for Saturday and Sunday. Friday, expect some gusting Southerly winds in advance of that cold front... which appears to be bringing most of its rain, well to our north.

Oh, and BTW, the tornado count from last weekend is up to 13.

Here's video from the Nashville area. Here is the statement from the Nat'l Wx Service in Nashville from Sunday night. The numbers on this map are just incredible.

Help, for Nashville is coming from an unlikely source.

Mid-Week

...
Temperatures will be running a good 10 degrees above normal for this time of year, and we are watching our next big cold front, getting ready to move across the area Friday. That will cool things, down, briefly. For updates on weekend damage, try the NWS home page.

Here's more on the flooding going on in Middle Tennessee.

Tiger Woods may soon lose his "Number 1" ranking in the world of Golf. They are off to the un-official "5th Major" this weekend as the TPC hosts "The Players" Championship in Jax, FL. There is little doubt in who would take his place.

...
Incredible amounts of rain from the weekend, it's going to be days, if not weeks and months before things get back to normal. The Nat'l Weather Service has re-issued a "Civil Emergency" notice. Travel toward Nashville on I-40 is impossible.

Lots of coverage on our website. www.wreg.com Here's a link to closings.

Soggy Weekend

...
It's looking more and more like a "Very wet" weekend ahead, starting with the showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Here's a look from the Severe Storms Prediction Center. AND, if you need even more, from the Memphis Nat'l Weather Service office.

Here's a chance to share with the Mid-South who YOU think is doing a great job.

So, how will this "adverse weather" affect the "Kentucky Derby?"

Does the Memphis area have a "Smog Season?" I don't think so, Atlanta does!
